As I’ve said on here before I’ve got quite a stash of fabric scraps left over from other projects and the fabric that my Grandmother left me. I also really love hair accessories so what better project to use up scraps than to make hair bows. I’ve seen similar bows floating around Pinterest for a while but I really wanted to come up with a plan that could allow me to make bows of several sizes. Because not all bows fit all hair styles.

It doesn’t take much scrap fabric and you can use what you already have to make the cutest bows for your or for children.

You need: fabric, sewing machine or a needle and thread, hair clips from the craft store, and a hot glue gun. It is nice to have a cutting mat and rotary cutter but it isn’t necessary. To make the different size bows the steps are all the same but the fabric sizes are as follows: Small 5″ x 7″, Medium 6″x9″, and Large 7″ x 10″. The small rectangles are all 2″ x 3″  .

Fold the larger rectangle in half on the long side with right sides facing each other. Stitch two of the sides leaving one open and turn the fabric right side out. Use an iron to get nice crisp lines on your large rectangle.

Fold the open edge shut and use a needle to hand stitch the rectangle closed. After you have stitched all the sides closed fold the rectangle like an accordion and stitch down the middle. For the larger bow I found I needed to make two stitches about a half inch apart to help the bow hold it’s shape.

Now use your little rectangle, fold in half on the short side with right sides together and make one stitch down the long side. Turn and iron to crisp edges. Use the hot glue gun to attach the clip to the small rectangle, I found this is the easiest way to attach the clip to the bow without getting hot glue everywhere.

Next you take the little rectangle and glue it to the headband wrapping the free end around and hot glue it to the other end. I didn’t finish off the ends of the rectangles I just used the hot glue and folding the ends in on each other to hide the raw edges.
